Tyler Fidler’s scoring and rebounding, plus the dynamic efforts of shooting guard, Andrew McGuinness (#15), and point man, Jarred Ogunbemi-Jackson (#3)  led the Calgary Dinos to a surprising 89-65 win over Northern Arizona Friday night.

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks obviously underestimated a young and relatively small Calgary Dinos team prior to their game Friday.  But the Dinos got their attention with an inspired defensive effort, and a 3 point shooting barrage, handing the visitors a crushing 89-65 defeat.

Calgary outshot NAU 54% to 35% from the floor, with 21 points from 2nd year point man, Jarred Ogunbemi-Jackson, and 19 from 4th year forward, Tyler Fidler.  The Dinos, led by Fidler’s 14 boards, beat the bigger ‘Jacks 39-33 on the glass.  Calgary was a red-hot 13/24 from 3 pt. range, with 2nd year guard, Andrew McGuinness hitting 4/6, and finishing with 16 points.

Calgary’s defense seemed to stifle the Northern attack, and their normally reliable shooters could only muster 19 total points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters combined.  Their physical style of defense had NAU giving Calgary numerous 2nd chances at the offensive end  for most of the game.

The Dinos dressed 14 players, but played only 12, as Greg Farneau and Nebojsa Kuljic sat it out.  Rookie post man Matt Letkeman , a muscular 6’7” post from Yale HS, Abbotsford, B.C., was impressive in his 1st outing; not giving an inch to his bigger, and more experienced opponents. The ‘small men’ for the Dinos ... Ogunbemi-Jackson, Andy Rochon, and Keenan Milburn all looked effective at both ends of the court, while Yuri Annisovets, a 3rd year post transfer from Toronto, was particularly effective at the defensive end.

These 2 teams play again at 7 pm Saturday night, and NAU can be expected to come out with a purpose, as losing to a Canadian team obviously didn’t sit well with the Lumberjacks.
